Marine life is being sorely threatened by our careless and thoughtless disposal of plastic!
Citizens of Norway were recently shocked and pained by what we saw on the TV screen... a dead whale washed up on the shores of a west coast fjord. When biologists sought to find the reason for its demise, they found that its stomach was full of plastic! No food, just plastic!! I do not treat this threat lightly, but strongly encourage us all to limit our use of plastic whenever and wherever possible, starting with plastic shopping bags! There are good alternatives on the market, and also we have one to offer ... a good sized, robust, waxed fabric shopping bag. It even comes decorated with a little elephant. It is easy to keep clean and has sturdy handles. The size us approx 31x36 cm and is priced at NOK 75. Last week we spoke of the magic of Wonderbags. This week, the magic of solar power! Solar lamps, an award winning Norwegian product that, when fully charged, can produce 100 hours light time. We received a gift (actually a Christmas gift to yours truly), of a solar lamp that is going to have a significant impact in homes in the Endlovini area. Most of the homes here do not yet have electricity installed, especially not my ladies.... then..... ..... when I, as a Norwegian Church Aid pensioner, was recently called upon to volunteer a day or two in their reception in Oslo, I found that THEY were selling such lamps from their net shop. Perfect for Endlovini! I immediately purchased five. So, six lamps are now to be found in homesteads in the hills in this area! On one of my recent SA sojourns I had a small "hello-ladies-gift " for each of them - a small LED torchlight. The following morning Khethiwe told me she had tied the flashlight to her head so that she could continue sewing after dark! She was one of the first lucky ones to receive a solar lamp! This solar device also functions as a USB phone charger, so the ladies can offer charging services to their neighbors, at a small cost, giving welcome coins in the kitty. How clever!!
In our on-going efforts to reduce the projects' running costs, we came across Wonderbags. A South African grunder is today running a most lucrative enterprise in nearby Tongaat. A great number of African women are now involved in producing the wonderbags, made from the traditional South African fabric SHWESHWE. The bags are shipped "all over the world" and four of them have found their way to Endlovini!
The magic is that you reduce cooking time to a quarter of what it takes to prepare a meal, by placing your pot in the wonderbag and leaving it there to finish the job! , thereby significantly reducing the use of gas. Four cooks who are delighted with the use of this magic are, from the left Joyce Vundla and Nomusa Ngema, creche cooks, and to the right Bongiwe Duma, one of the hospice cooks. Joyce and Nomsa both work Mondays through Fridays, whilst the hospice cooks work alternately, one week on, one week off. |
